Poetry Slam

Jenn's haiku challenge theme this week is

FLAMES!

In high school he was
just a flame -- but he's the one
I'll love forever.

My temper flames up.
I can't express how I wish
I could let it go!

A flame sucks me in.
Hypnotized, I gaze through
to a secret place.

In honor of the day . . . .

. . . and a "Generous" Irish blessing
to the lot of you:

And may you be in
Heav'n a half hour before the
Devil knows you're dead!

Poetry Slam: Chrysalis

You know, you could join in the haiku party yourself! Check it out at Jenn's wonderful blog. You know . . . that blog?

Little girl's body
Could not hold her giant heart.
And so she grew up.

From outside no change
is seen. But the soul is fed
by non-stop loving.*

*Chrysalis offers spiritual renewal to young people through a three-day retreat experience and follow-up community gatherings. Aimed primarily at high school and college youth, it is an offshoot of the ecumenical Cursillo and Emmaus movements. More information can be found here.

Poetry Slam!

Jenn's haiku theme this week:
The Road

The road in Texas
is straight, flat, never-ending.
But look at the sky!

"The Road Not Taken:"
Robert Frost spoke to my heart,
and I still wonder . . . .

My journey will lead
me to the best surprises
when I leave the road.

Silly Haiku Wednesday

Poetry slam time again!
Jenn's theme this week is
WATER.

Rain spatters against
the leaves; the wooded path
leads me on toward sun.

The ocean lulls me
to restful peace; then, I can
let the loud world go.

Sometimes -- just sometimes,
I long for a canoe, and
one true companion.

Silly Haiku Wednesday

It's time for another poetry slam -- and this week Jenn's theme is very timely: SEASONS.

Leaves change and my heart
sinks a tiny little bit.
I don't like the fall.

Nothing makes my day
Like these happy, happy words:
"Schools closed due to snow!"

As the weather warms,
I hope (knowing better) that
I can make things grow.

Summer! Now there's a
season I can get behind!
Give me sun and heat!

Silly Haiku Wednesday

It's Wednesday -- and that means another haiku poetry slam. Jenn's theme this week is TIME.

I feel like the White
Rabbit -- always hurrying.
Yes -- and always late.

Look at all of us!
We were younger and smaller --
But time marches on.

Time is the item
more precious than gold to me --
I always need more!

Silly Haiku Wednesday

Join the fun!

Jenn's theme this week is LIGHT.

My tall boy needs no
step ladder or chair to change
a light bulb. He's tall.

I woke up -- the light
outside seemed different. "Get
up! We've overslept!!"

Thy word is a lamp
unto my feet, and thus a
light unto my path.

Silly Haiku Wednesday

Jenn's haiku theme this week is MUSIC. Oh, my dears!

The radio plays;
An iPod playlist shuffles:
"Ooh! I love that song!"

I love to belt out
"Paradise by the Dashboard
Light." It kills my kids!

The hymn says it all:
"How can I keep from singing?"
The theme of my life.

I can really go to town on Jenn's theme this week: CHAOS! Have mercy, people -- she's singing my song!

What looks like chaos
to you makes me feel as though
something's getting done.

Chaos theory: math,
physics, and randomness: the
butterfly effect!
I thrive on chaos.
I really do -- it's just the
laundry that kills me.

Jenn's theme this week: EDUCATION.

So, you know that I'm denying the reality that school has started, that my tall boy is a senior (so weird: he was seven just a minute ago . . . ) and that once again I have been thrust against my will into the hugger-mugger, frenetic pace of the American public school year. But I will put on my big-girl panties and proceed:

Carpool Cuties

Heading back to school,
my urchins are less than thrilled
to begin again.

My dad always said,
"Don't let your books get in the
Way of your learning."

And Dad said (a lot):
"Quick! What is eight times seven?!?"
(Times tables. They sucked.)

Silly Haiku Wednesday -- Just Under the Wire

Join the fun!
This week's haiku theme over at Jenn's fabulous blog is free-style -- which means I can express whatever is on my mind and in my heart. And what's on my mind is tragic, people:

Oh, no! The school year
Starts next week. I'm not ready
For that hectic pace!

Good-bye to summer.
Sleeping in, trips to the beach --

All behind me now.

I'm volunteering
Again! Somebody stop me
Before it's too late!

Jenn's challenge this week: a silly haiku about appreciation. I must protest: appreciation (especially appreciation of me) is never silly! But I digress. Let's see . . .

A little respect!
I'm the Rodney Dangerfield
of mommies. Or not.

When I hear, "Thanks for
the grilled cheese sandwich, Mama!"
I can keep going.

During these hard times
I am so thankful to Him
That I have so much.

Silly Haiku Wednesday

Join the fun!
It's that time again over at Jenn's blog. You should try it yourself -- you know you want to! This week's theme is separation -- which could go just a whole lot of ways, couldn't it?

I grew up Army;
moving and saying good-bye
seemed normal to me.

The Golden Compass
gave "separation" a whole
new meaning: tragic.

Cooking is so not
My thing. Separating eggs --
Harder than it looks!
